For many years, problem intersections have been the cause of ongoing Irvine car accidents in California. One would think that Irvine with its master-planned streets and modern traffic control systems would have fewer car collisions than most cities its size. Unfortunately, like many cities in California, Irvine has its ample share of Orange County car crashes. According to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) in 2006, 11 people were killed in fatal car accidents and 869 were injured. Alcohol related accidents accounted for four car fatalities and 61 injuries. Motorcycle accidents killed one person and injured 52.

Irvine has identified a number of dangerous intersections and traffic conditions that may be contributing to its car accident rate. Increasing traffic, recurring driving violations and high-speed limits have made the intersection of Culver and Michelson the most dangerous in the city–killing a 13-year old bicyclist in September of 2006. This tragic pedestrian accident may have been prevented had the city taken better safety precautions. The boy’s parents would be well advised to consult with an experienced car accident attorney. According to the city’s most recent data in 2004, this dangerous intersection had 12 car accidents, the highest in the city. Merging and driveways are two problems that plague Michelson near the intersection. Two lanes quickly drop to one lane in the same area shared by a bus stop and two driveways–one for a gas station and the other for a shopping center. Other traffic problems include:

  • Illegal left turns made out of the shopping center onto Michelson
  • No signal across Michelson between the Wholesome Choice market and residences
  • Difficult-to-see pedestrians in crosswalk near the Wholesome Choice market
  • Excessively high speed limits on Michelson’s west side — 45 mph
  • U-turns made in medians on Culver before the intersection
  • High traffic volume and lack of parking due to nearby UCI and Park West

Even some of California’s most master-planned communities have problem areas where fatal car accidents can occur. Illegal turns, U-turns and accident-prone entrances and exits can cause car collisions and personal injuries.

Irvine takes a multi-pronged approach to reducing the number of these Irvine car accidents. Besides addressing its dangerous roads, the city has installed video systems that capture red-light runners. These systems do everything from monitoring violations to issuing citations. Unlike many red-light runner systems, this technology even provides a car collision avoidance feature that can delay cross traffic from entering an intersection while a violator runs a red light. For each red-light-running incident, the system records a brief video sequence of the violation as well as close-up color images of both the front and rear license plates of the vehicle. Reducing red-light runners and car accidents are among Irvine’s top priorities.
